The CVI Summer Research Program is funded by several awards and sources and each mechanism has its own specific requirements, restrictions, and funding amounts.
Students in the CVI Summer Research Program receive either stipends or a combination of on-campus housing and a much smaller stipend. Some students also have a small travel allowance. Each students award details are determined by their specific funding source, each of which has its own requirements.

Since 2022, CVI has partnered with the Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery to provide 2-3 training opportunities to undergraduate or medical students from undergraduate backgrounds with a passion to pursue careers in cardiothoracic surgery. The Cardiothoracic Surgery Diversifying the Pipeline Program award was granted to Dr. Tomi Obafemi, a cardiothoracic surgery resident who has devoted the funds to providing mentorship, exam prep, research training opportunities to students from underrepresented backgrounds.
In 2023, CVI partnered with the Office of Education and Stem Outreach to support training opportunities for two community college students. Community college students often do not have the same opportunities as students at four-year institutions to obtain research experiences and these opportunities will help bridge that gap.
