<aside> 📌 The CVI Summer Research Program cannot facilitate shadowing opportunities for students. Students may work with their research mentors or reach out to Stanford clinical faculty independently to inquire about shadowing opportunities.

Many students are interested in participating in patient care rounds either in the clinic or inpatient setting. It’s very hard for visiting students to be able to shadow doctors. The appointment type to allow this is: Visiting Observer. This appointment category is managed by the SHC/SCH Compliance Office, who can be contacted at [email protected].
PIs can "host" visiting (non-Stanford) students for up to a month at a time as "visiting observers" albeit after:
The paperwork and accompanying training may take several months to put together and get approved.
Note: If the student is already enrolled at Stanford, there is a program called SIMS that streamlines this process.
The PI fills out a Visiting Observer Request Form and sends it to [email protected]. They usually respond within a couple of days, but it can take up to two weeks. The main parts the PI needs to fill out are what type of work the student will be doing and what parts of the hospital they’ll need access to.
Then the visiting observer office will respond with a list of exactly what information is needed, including getting approval from OHS, the OR if necessary, a signature from the department chair on the attestation, &c.
Once this documentation is collected, it can be sent to the visiting observer office who will then grant approval.
